COURT RULING ON BREDELL LAND INVADERS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY SALAM ABRAM, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON AGRICULTURE AND LAND AFFAIRS

The fact that the Pretoria High Court has finally ruled in the case against the land invaders at Bredell is welcomed.

The UDM calls on the PAC to take responsibility for the chain of events they have set in motion by assisting in the upholding of this court decision, and to ensure that no further disruption to the lives of the people involved are caused. The PAC must show maturity and prevent the possible escalation of this situation into violence, should the Sheriff of the Court have to resort to forcible removals because land invaders have not obeyed the court order.

The UDM repeats its regret that a political party, in this case the PAC, has abused the poor. This whole debacle emphasizes the dismal performance of the government with regards to land reform and the delivery of housing. As long  as millions of people remain destitute, without property or shelter, situations such as these will be waiting to happen.
