MEDIA RELEASE

UNEMPLOYMENT IS A NATIONAL CRISIS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON FINANCE

The latest unemployment figures released by Statistics South Africa highlight that unemployment is a national crisis. The level of unemployment at 25% remains unacceptably high, and confirms that job creation is the single most important economic challenge facing South Africa.

The UDM welcomes the establishment of the Labour Force Survey (LFS), and hopefully forms part of a long-overdue employment statistics revamp that the UDM has been advocating. The UDM reiterates its view that sustainable and realistic government policy can only be built on the basis of sound, reliable and timely statistics.

The UDM remains convinced that the final solution for unemployment lies in a comprehensive Enterprise Development strategy, driven by SMMEs. Such a strategy should be focussed on people acquiring training and skills relevant for 21st century jobs.
