IMPORTANCE OF TRADITIONAL LEADERS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY D. MKONO, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Historically and culturally the institution of traditional leadership is pivotal to the socio-economic political life of African societies. The vast majority of South Africans still regard it as the institution, which continues to be the custodian of their culture, custom, traditions and moral values.

In anticipation of the outcome of the meeting between Traditional Leaders and members of the Cabinet, the UDM wishes to re-iterate that the success of any government, even in contemporary South Africa, depends largely on the recognition of the role of traditional leaders in all spheres of government. It is of exceptional concern that the ANC government has not yet realised the importance and value of traditional leaders, as they are the primary legitimating component in African societies for all levels of authority and government.

The UDM calls upon government to come up with a system of government that integrates the positive attributes of African and Western forms of governance, recognising that any effort at Rural Revitalisation without the cooperation of Traditional Leaders would be futile.
