SARFU BUNGLING OVER SAIL TOURNAMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SPORT AND RECREATION

The inaugural SAIL rugby tournament featuring eight of the country's provincial teams staggers from one scandalous incident to the other. The latest furore centres around comments by Border Rugby Union President, and SARFU executive member, John Ncinane that the tournament does not have the backing of SARFU, is a case in point. These claims have been refuted by SAIL manager, Morne du Plessis, saying that he is in possession of a letter of agreement from SARFU.

This is another example of SARFU and rugby administrators making ridiculous comments in the media, before thinking about the severe impact these will have on future tournaments and sponsors, especially for smaller rugby unions.

It is clear that the important decisions about tournament and venues must be dealt with by SARFU, in the proper forum, and not by SARFU executives in the media.
