MANAGEMENT OF SAPS INFORMERS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MS. ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The Minister of Safety and Security must immediately clarify whether any Members of Parliament are informers for SAPS. Similarly, the Minister of Intelligence needs to indicate whether any NIA informers or agents are MP's.

Selebi's admittance of lax control and the jest regarding Members of Parliament being informers have raised serious questions. Though the comments about MP's may have been made in jest, such a situation would be totally unconstitutional. The UDM finds it distasteful that the Commissioner nonchalantly commented on Members of Parliament being police informers.

A further indication of the shambles and financial mismanagement regarding informers is the frivolous manner in which Commissioner Selebi commented that informers have been paid approximately R30 million in the past financial year, with little or no control over who gets paid, and for what.

In light of the confusion surrounding the comments made by Commissioner Selebi, the UDM urges the Commissioner and the Minister to stop making foolhardy remarks surrounding issues of crime.
