MAGISTRATES PROTEST

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR J MASEKA MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR JUSTICE

The "work to rule" action by Magistrates embarked upon yesterday puts the spotlight once again on the inefficiencies of the Justice Department in dealing with the grievances of its personnel.

The widespread support of approximately 1 600 magistrates highlights their low salaries and exclusion from decision-making. With an already crippling backlog, this "work to rule" action threatens to grind to a halt the already stumbling Justice System.

The question of the judicial independence of the lower courts is once again highlighted. The UDM calls upon the Minister of Justice to urgently implement plans to create a constructive environment conducive to the proper administration of justice.
