MBEKI MUST EXPLAIN SAA INVOLVEMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

The latest revelations in the SAA scandal indicate the direct involvement of President Mbeki in the affairs of SAA. It is disconcerting that the President flew to Switzerland with Saki Macozoma to salvage the SwissAir deal, when this is clearly the line function of the Minister of Public Enterprises. This seems to vindicate the claims of Macozoma that the appointment of Coleman Andrews was approved "at the highest levels".

The confusion and bungling surrounding this scandal continues unabated, since it now appears that a cabinet meeting without Mbeki decided to launch investigations into Macozoma role in appointing Andrews. Mbeki in the meanwhile has been visiting the United Kingdom, with Macozoma being one of the SA delegates who joined him on the trip.

These events point to power struggles within ANC circles spilling over into government. Once again the South African taxpayer is the victim.
