MEDIA RELEASE

UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE AND BACKLOGS HORRIFIC

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR J MASEKA, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR JUSTICE

The UDM expresses its concern that the master's office at the Pretoria High Court is battling to reduce a backlog of more than 32 000 inquiries about the administration of estates.

While the Justice Department indicated that there was a backlog of about 32 710 enquiries and that the department was struggling financially to cope, the UDM finds it outrageous that the Auditor-General found that there was nauthorised expenditure totalling R70m in the department last year alone. Justice remains the weak link in the fight against crime and this is just a further manifestation thereof.

The UDM calls upon the Minister of Justice to urgently curtail all unauthorised expenditures so that this money may be channelled correctly and to implement constructive measures to combat the backlog of court cases and enquiries.
