FUNDING FROM THE UNITED STATES
ISSUED BY DR GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR FINANCE
UDM welcomes the United States draft bill on Global Access to affordable
HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment, which would devote $50 million specifically
to helping poor countries purchase AIDS-related drugs and a further $470 million
for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Foreign funding and aid to SA and the region is a prerequisite for economic and
social progress. The UDM expresses its concern that this donation, however
well-intended, may not be properly administered by the South African government,
following a spate of diversionary tactics by the Minister of Health and the ANC
government. This reflection of inadequate administration and warped
prioritisation simply highlights a government who are not addressing the
concerns and life-threatening issues of the people.
The UDM calls on the Minister of Health to devise and implement appropriate
measure so as purchase anti-retroviral drugs for the prevention and treatment of
HIV/AIDS and to stop procrastinating while people suffer and die. We urge
government to ensure that foreign funding and aid are administered in a proper
and transparent manner to ensure that it reaches the intended beneficiaries.
