SA TOURISM INDUSTRY WARNING

STATEMENT ISSUED BY PROF LM MBADI, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

The UDM expresses its concern at the fact that South Africa is not fulfilling its great potential as a popular international tourism destination. This was echoed by the World Tourism Organisation secretary-general Francesco Frangialli.

It has become more important than ever before that the problem be dealt with openly and receive undivided attention at the highest government level. With escalating crime rates and a moratorium on crime statistics, non-deliverance by the ANC government has exacerbated the crisis in the tourism industry.

Lack of adequate regulation and networking amongst tour operators and the lack of promotion of black entrepreneurs is a clear indication of government 's inability to deal with this important industry. Government should be promoting growth in an industry that has the potential to create jobs and wealth that may be redirected into other sectors such as education, health and housing.

The UDM calls on government to seriously act upon the warning given by the World Tourism Organisation.
