PENSIONERS SUFFER DUE TO FRAUD IN WELFARE DEPARTMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY PROF LM MBADI, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR WELFARE

The UDM is disgusted with the provincial welfare department in the Eastern Cape that "lost" more than R18 million since January through theft and pilferage committed by welfare officials.

The effects of such losses are far-reaching. Most pensioners in South Africa, especially in the Eastern Cape, are solely dependent on these grants. Since fraud, late payments and non-payment is such a frequent occurrence many of our elderly do not have the means to attend to their basic needs.

In a shockingly misguided attempt to curb the wave of fraud and corruption, the department wrongfully struck off the roll close to a 100 disability grant recipients. This has resulted in an embarrassing court action to reinstate those struck off the roll and has highlighted the dysfunctional state of this department.

The UDM calls upon the Minister of Welfare to urgently attend to this horrific situation, which is causing many South Africans to suffer unnecessarily on a daily basis.
