ASYLUM POLICY ABANDONMENT EMBARRASSING

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZé VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR HOME AFFAIRS

The UDM notes that the Department of Home Affairs handed a victory to Lawyers for Human Rights in a Pretoria High Court challenge yesterday regarding its controversial asylum policy.

The UDM calls on Cabinet Minister of Home Affairs Mangosuthu Buthelezi and his Director-General, Billy Masetlha, to finalise the Immigration Policy. Frankly, the current state of affairs is an embarrassment and highlights a Department in dire straits.

The UDM expresses its dissatisfaction at this state of affairs as it could have been avoided if the policies were in place in advance and that the department should not be run by decree.

In the meanwhile, the department's legal costs amount to millions of rands a year, with the unfortunate SA taxpayer being forced to foot the bill.
