MEDIA RELEASE

PARLIAMENT MARGINALISED FROM ARMS INVESTIGATION

STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR PUBLIC ACCOUNTS

The UDM notes with dismay that the bodies investigating the arms deal are continuing with their investigation launched by SCOPA, despite the fact that SCOPA has not issued the terms of reference for the investigation. The Investigative Team has unilaterally announced their intent, without consulting SCOPA or Parliament, to conduct hearings in public.

The UDM questions the decision of subpoenas being issued by the investigators, which have served to shift public attention onto the whistle-blowers as opposed to suspects. It is possible that potential whistle-blowers will may be scared to come forward with information publicly, and would rather remain silent.

Calls on the investigators to clarify whether they are operating on the terms of reference of SCOPA, the Executive, the ruling party or their own. It seems that the first report of SCOPA in this regard will not be implemented, while the second is being delayed indefinitely.
