UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

MBEKI SHOULD PUNISH TSHWETE

STATEMENT ISSUED BY BANTU HOLOMISA, MP
UDM PRESIDENT

President Mbekiís admission last night in an interview with Channel 4 of Britain that Tshwete was wrong in naming three businessmen as suspected plotters, demands of Mbeki to discipline Minister Tshwete.

Mbeki acted irresponsibly in sharing his opinions on this matter of national importance exclusively via the international media. In this globalised world Mbeki must realise that comments to the international media will find its way back to South African audiences. The President must speak directly and timeously to South Africans. It is ironic that he still chose to speak exclusively to the international media on this important issue, considering his recent meeting with South African editors ostensibly to patch up his relationship with them.

President Mbeki must bear full responsibility for the way in which his statements yesterday, as well as those of Tshwete, have served only to further confuse the South African population and the world. With each passing day this saga increasingly damage South Africaís image and investor-confidence.

The UDM wishes to remind Mbeki that his responsibility lies with South Africa first. If he succeeds in that, the international goodwill will follow automatically.
