MBEKI THREATENS BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR TRADE AND INDUSTRY

The UDM is extremely concerned that Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) will falter due to the Mbeki-plot allegations against leading businessmen in the BEE field. The UDM notes with dismay that the BEE Commission is considering to remove Cyril Ramaphosa, who has been the driving force behind the Commission, from its list of delegates to meet with President Mbeki, due to the unfolding plot saga.

The UDM believes that President Mbeki should stop hiding behind Minister Tshwete and take full responsibility for this looming BEE crisis, and other impending ramifications, resulting from the plot allegations. It would do untold damage to the South African economy and the upliftment of previously disadvantaged people if BEE were to falter.

Cyril Ramaphosa has a proven track record as a leader in the BEE field, the BEE Commission would be hard pressed to complete its work without his inputs. Unfortunately, this seems to be option that will be forced onto the Commission.

This issue also raises the very serious question of whether recent allegations against Mr Ramaphosa are the result of his high profile within this important Commission, as well as his and the Commissionís criticism of current government policy.
