UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

DA SHOULD RELEASE CRIME FIGURES
IN WESTERN CAPE

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The UDM again repeats its call to the Democratic Alliance government in the Western Cape to release the crime figures for the Province.  It is clear from the past few days’ media reports that crime and more specifically violent crimes are on the increase in the city of Cape Town.

The moratorium imposed on the release of crime statistics poses a danger for law-abiding citizens.  It deprives them of vital information on where certain types of crime are committed and the opportunity to avoid certain areas and circumstances.  This is a direct failure by government in its constitutional duty to protect the person and property of the citizen.

The Provincial government of the Western Cape is however not ANC controlled but controlled by the Democratic Alliance. It is for that reason that the UDM calls on the Provincial Minister for Community Safety, Hennie Bester, to defy National Minister Tswete’s moratorium and make public the crime figures for the Western Cape.  It is in the interest of all inhabitants of the Western Cape and will clearly demonstrate the seriousness with which the DA is approaching the issue of crime and challenging the moratorium.
