UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

YENGENI MAKES A MOCKERY OF ACCOUNTABILITY

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM MEMBER FOR JOINT COMMITTEE OF ETHICS AND MEMBERS’ INTERESTS

The UDM is dismayed by the behaviour of Mr Tony Yengeni towards Parliament’s Joint Committee of Ethics and Members’ Interests. The UDM expects Mr Yengeni to treat Parliament, and the committees of this institution, with the respect and dignity it deserves. One cannot help but wonder: what is the difference between Mr Yengeni’s behaviour and that of Mr Peter Marias, whom the ANC has roundly denounced as having contempt for Parliament?

His questioning of procedures has necessitated a second written request to him to explain his motor vehicle and house. The result is that the Committee’s time and energy is being wasted, in direct contravention of the Speaker’s express wish for an expedient resolution of the matter.

As Chief Whip of the Majority Party in Parliament, Mr Yengeni must act as custodian of democracy, and set an example for all of society.

Ironically, Mr Yengeni himself has repeatedly cried “witch hunt”, but now holds up the process that will prove his often repeated claims of innocence. Furthermore, he is directly causing the inquiry to become more strenuous.

The UDM expresses the wish that his procedural inquiry, instead of response, to the Committee will not be interpreted by the public as an admission of guilt. He must realise that his behaviour casts a shadow of doubt, not only over himself, but all Members of Parliament.
