PRESIDENTIAL AIDS PANEL REPORT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY STATEMENT ISSUED BY JAKE MASEKA, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR HEALTH

The Presidential AIDS Panel released report does not remotely contribute to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In essence the report represents the wastage of millions of rands that could have been applied much better in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The UDM sincerely hopes that this report will spell the end of President Mbekiís dalliance in scientific and intellectual debate, and that governmentís focus will return to governing. Government should without further delay take up its responsibility to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The UDM acknowledges that an African stance must be taken when dealing with the issue. Better statistics are acquired and more rigorous education programmes must be implemented.

The UDM remains committed to the fight against AIDS. We strongly believe that the fight against AIDS is the responsibility of every South African. The UDM recognizes this disease as the most serious threat to Africa. Funding must be made available for credible research and the development of preventative measures. Education must emphasize the responsibility that goes with a sexual relationship and the vulnerability of every individual in this regard. Every effort and resource must be applied to the prevention of, and the fight against, this disease.
