COP KILLINGS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The SAPS is not able to provide information on incidents of SAPS members killed whilst on duty. This shocking state of affairs became evident in an answer received in reply to a parliamentary question.

It is a known fact that members of the SAPS have become a specific target for criminals. Yet, the Department is unable/unwilling to indicate where these fatal attacks are taking place and thus whether a pattern for these attacks exists.

It is inconceivable that the SAPS is able to do proper strategic planning in the absence of this vital information. This either means that the department is thumb-sucking when it does strategic planning, consequently undermining the credibility of the National Crime Prevention Plan. Alternatively, the SAPS does not care for its most important resource, its officers. Each life lost in the fight against crime is a life too many.

The UDM calls on the Minister and the Department to explain the current unacceptable state of affairs and to indicate as a matter of urgency what it plans to do about the situation so that the people of South Africa can be assured that the SAPS is planning and executing from an informed position.
