SHOCKING HIGH RATE OF DEATHS IN PRISON

STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR SIPO MZIMELA, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

The UDM is alarmed at the latest statistics on conditions in SA prisons. Especially disturbing is the dramatic increase of natural deaths, 584% over the past five years.

The inspecting judge of Prisons, Johannes Fagan, has indicated that these deaths are mostly as a result of HIV/AIDS. The judge further predicted that the current death rate would result in 45 000 prisoners dying per year by 2010.

The rate of natural deaths in prison is directly related to the appalling conditions, with overcrowding and rape being the norm. The conditions currently existing in SA prisons exacerbate criminality rather than serving as rehabilitation, explaining the high number of habitual criminals.

The UDM calls on the Minister of Correctional Services to immediately address both the conditions in prisons, as well as the unacceptable lack of a concerted HIV/AIDS strategy.
