UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

NEWLANDS SOCCER SAGA TO BE ADDRESSED BY PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON SPORT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SPORT

The UDM welcomes the decision of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport to invite all role-players in the Newlands saga to come and address it next week.

The UDM is perturbed by the impact of this whole affair on the development of sport in the Western Cape. It is especially disturbing that events have spiralled so far out of control that international sporting fixtures have been influenced.

Sport is one of the unifying factors in South Africa, we must not tolerate a situation where sport becomes tangled in racial stereotypes, especially when politicians get involved. Multi-sport stadiums is a reality in a country with such a wide range of sporting interests. There are stadiums that have handled this issue with great success; there is no reason why Newlands cannot follow that example.

South Africans rightly expect of their sportsmen and women, as well as their administrators and politicians, to act as ambassadors for the country. It is after all on the sport fields that we continually demonstrate, to ourselves and the world, the miracle our new democratic dispensation. In this light, it is simply unacceptable that this issue has been allowed to degenerate into a mudslinging contest, which eventually harms sports development and SA’s image.

The UDM urges all role-players to use the opportunity of next week’s Portfolio Committee meeting to resolve the matter amicably.
