MEDIA RELEASE

ALLEGED LEAKING OF SARFU DECISION TO
PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

STATEMENT ISSUED BY CEDRIC FROLICK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SPORT AND RECREATION

Media reports that the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Sport and Recreation had issued a statement congratulating SARFU on its decision, not to dismiss Nick Mallet, before the SARFU meeting has finished, raises serious questions about the role of politicians and Parliament in sports administration.

As far as we know the Minister of Sport has clearly stated that government policy is to let sports federations handle their internal matters without interference.

The UDM has requested the Sports and Recreation Committee Chairperson to put this matter on the agenda for Tuesday 5 September 2000. Firstly, it is important to clear the air and put an end to speculation of political interference. Secondly, the meeting must reaffirm the principle of independence for sports federations.
