CAPE TOWN BOMBINGS

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

Yet another week and another act of terror in Cape Town followed by another gust of hot air and empty promises from politicians.

Yesterday the third act of urban terror in three weeks and the 19th in 26 months hit the citizens of Cape Town.  This was promptly followed by the expected rhetoric from the Minister for Safety and Security.  Yet again the people of Cape Town was told that the police will increase its efforts to bring those responsible for these cowardly acts to book.

This follows a statement after the attack on the Bronx, that the authorities know who are behind these attacks, but that they still need the necessary intelligence to back this up in court. This seems highly unlikely, since intelligence gathering should lead to identification of the perpetrators, and not the other way around.  In the meantime Capetonians live in fear and the city is losing its appeal as a tourist attraction; tourism being a major source of income and employment for the Province.

The UDM calls on the DA provincial government and the ANC national government to put aside their political differences and to work shoulder to shoulder to bring an end to the acts of urban terrorism in Cape Town.  This time an eyewitness spoke to a suspect involved, surely it must be possible to draw up an identikit and release it to the public for assistance.  There can be no talk about freedom, if the people of Cape Town cannot live free of fear from these faceless terrorists.
