MEDIA RELEASE

MEMBERS OF THE POLICE DESERVE BETTER SALARIES

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The call by Commissioner Selebi for improved salaries and working conditions for members of the SAPS is strongly supported by the UDM.

The UDM called, even during this year's budget debate, for members of the SAPS to be treated differently than other government officials.

The UDM believes that salary increases are just one avenue that must be embarked upon towards improving the working conditions of police personnel. Another is career development that makes it possible for an individual member, who so chooses, to develop their career in actual policing. It should become possible for an individual to plan their career in actual policing and should not require for a promotion to mean a desk job.

Active policing should become a career choice with promotional opportunities and career development a reality. Police members should be encouraged and receive the monetary and "status" rewards they deserve.
