successful completion of the Comrades Marathon proves once again South Africa's
ability to host large sporting events. As was the case with the Rugby World Cup
1995 and numerous other events, South Africans have proven that they can rally
together when it comes to sport. Sport remains one of the greatest unifying
forces in our society.
The reports that the Comrades Marathon generated R300 million for the economy of
that region where it is held, confirms also the huge economic potential that
international sporting events hold. Soccer World Cup 2006 is within our grasp,
hopefully the bidding committee takes note of this further proof of our
readiness and willingness to host sporting events of magnitude.
Simultaneously, the spectre of soccer violence raised its head in the Euro 2000
match between England and Germany. We sympathise with the victims of the
violence, but hope that the World Cup 2006 bidding committee takes note that
group violence of this nature is very uncommon for South African soccer, and
Africa deserves a chance to host the World Cup Soccer tournament; South Africa
has shown its ability to do so countless times.
