GOLDEN ARROW HOLDS COMMUNITY BASED ORGANISATIONS TO RANSOM

STATEMENT ISSUED BY TOMMY ABRAHAMS, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON FOR TRANSPORT

The decision of the Golden Arrow Foundation to suspend forthwith all support to community-based organisations, is regrettable and unfortunate. This support usually takes the form of subsidised transport.

Aside from the abandonment of at least 12 projects, Golden Arrow has balefully also suspended al subsidised bus transport to rallies on Youth Day (Friday 16 June).

The conclusion one cannot help but arrive at is that Golden Arrow, a government subsidised bus company, has decided to punish the youth and the affected community organisations for the failures of Government.

It is highly unacceptable that a business, whose revenue is derived from a service to the people, should withdraw assistance to those very people, when such assistance should be given as a matter of social conscience.

The UDM urges Golden Arrow to review its decision and further calls on the Western Cape Government to do everything possible to resolve the transport problems that are rippling out into all areas of community life.
