STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR GERHARD KOORNHOF, MP
UDM PARLIAMENTARIAN FOR FREE STATE
UDM expresses its shock at revelations by the Director General of the Free State
administration, Mr Khotso de Wee, regarding the extent of fraud, corruption and
unauthorised expenditure in several provincial departments.
The greatest concern for the UDM is the 345 cases of corruption in the
Department of Education, of which at least 40 are linked to crime syndicates.
Education is one of the cornerstones of democracy, where every cent has to be
stretched to ensure that our children are empowered with the necessary skills to
participate in the 21st century. This corruption and fraud must be eradicated,

The UDM calls on the Free State legislature to immediately institute mechanisms
to bring to book the accounting officers of departments where cases of
corruption and fraud have been exposed. In cases where corruption, fraud and
unauthorised spending have been repeated over a period of numerous years, the
MEC of the particular department must explain this to the provincial
If negligence can be proven, swift action must be taken against the guilty
parties. The ANC government of the province must show the political will and
commitment to eradicate corruption once and for all. This can only be achieved
through swift and harsh action against transgressors, in order to set an example
to all, whether politician or official, that corruption will not be tolerated.
