DEPLOYMENT OF MORE SECURITY FORCES IN TROUBLED WESTERN CAPE AREAS: TAXI AND BUS CONFLICT

STATEMENT ISSUED BY MALIZOLE DIKO
UDM NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON

The UDM welcomes the deployment of more security forces in the troubled Western Cape areas. The UDM sees this deployment as a measure to save and protect the lives of innocent commuters and not as a solution to the ongoing transport conflict.

The UDM still believes that a solution can only be found when all stakeholders (bus, taxi and Government) in this conflict meet and discuss ways of solving the conflict. The UDM hopes that the intervention by the National Government will help facilitate such a meeting, which the Western Cape MEC for Transport has avoided for such a long time.

The UDM believes that confrontation is not the solution. The closure of taxi ranks not a solution either. It is, however, sad that we have to loose so many innocent lives before the government realises this.

The UDM hopes that this time we will see a fruitful meeting that will put to an end the suffering of innocent people.
