MEDIA RELEASE

BEATRIX MINING ACCIDENT

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY NELSON RAMODIKE, MP
SPOKESPERSON FOR MINERALS AND ENERGY

The UDM would like to extend its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the miners who died in the tragic Beatrix mining accident.

The UDM has expressed its concern about Mine Safety in Parliament. We acknowledge that much has been achieved in the past few years to ensure that our mines are safer place of work. However, it is an irrefutable fact that mining accidents are on the increase again.

The UDM calls on Government to reconsider the legislation governing Mine Safety. The safety regulations are myriad but it seems that the penalties are not enough of a deterrent and that enforcement is lacking. The Parliamentary Committee on Minerals and Energy must consider given this law teeth.

The UDM calls on the Minister of Minerals and Energy to set aside a greater portion of his budget for Mine Safety Inspectors.
