UDM SUPPORTS TRADITIONAL LEADER'S BILL

MEDIA RELEASE ISSUED BY CHIEF MTIRARA, MP

The National House Leaders of Traditional Leaders amendment bill is fully supported by the UDM.

The Chairperson and Deputies are to be permanent members of National House of Traditional Leaders, and in the near future Government must consider that even members of the House should be full-time members. Our cultures and traditional norms allow, that Traditional Leaders can occupy another position and during that time another member of the family is acting as the Chief.

The provision to be made in this Bill for the removal of a Chairperson of Deputy-Chairperson from the office by a resolution adopted with the support of a majority vote of the members of the National House on the ground of misconduct, incapacity and incompetence is welcomed.

The UDM rejects the idea that the remuneration of Traditional Leaders should be on contractual basis.  The fact of the matter is that the powers wielded by Traditional Leaders is hereditary in the context of royal blood and kingdom and or chiefdom, whereby Traditional Leaders are accountable to their subjects 24 hours around the clock.
