EXECUTIVE NEEDS TO BE KEPT ACCOUNTABLE

MEDIA STATEMENT BY MALIZOLE DIKO
UDM NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON

The presentation by the Public Protector Selby Baqwa is a clear indication that there is no real mechanism to keep the executive (Cabinet) in line.

Commissions are set up, maladministration, corruption and ill disciplined public servants investigated and those found responsible fired; this must include those who are politically responsible for Government departments: Cabinet. In South Africa the culture of political responsibility is absent. It seems Government Officials always get the rap and not the Ministers.

There have been cases where the conduct of Ministers has been questioned. What is annoying though, is that nothing is a done to them; they seem to be the law into themselves. This cannot be left unchallenged; this is a good recipe for government arrogance as we see it displaying itself in Zimbabwe.

Government must show its commitment by acting against Maduna, an apology is simply not enough. Let this be a lesson to all members of the Executive, they are not above the Law. The Executive is accountable to the people of this country and the system put in place to guard our democracy.
