UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR CABINET

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

Government should lead by example and in all its actions. It held workshops on corruption, it voices concerns, but does very little to address or improve the issue directly.

The announcement that Government has now approved a code of conduct for its executive is received with sceptical optimism. We are optimistic because it is very important that such a code exists, but we are sceptical since it might easily remain rules on paper with no guiding principles on how it will be enforced.

The UDM would call on Government to be transparent and demonstrate its seriousness by also developing a process of acting against those who contravene this code. Actions against transgressors rest with premiers and the President.

If police cannot police themselves, then we cannot allow politicians be left to police themselves.
