UDM WELCOMES PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE ON DRC

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY MASILO MABETA, MP
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The UDM welcomes the announcement by Minister Zuma that a Parliamentary debate will be held on the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes Region.

We must however note that the announcement is long overdue, and that our previous requests for such a debate were turned down. Nonetheless, we will utilise this belated opportunity to express our views. The importance of such debates for transparency and accountability cannot be overemphasised. Such transparency and accountability by the Executive is owed to the people of South Africa, who in their wisdom have through the SA Constitution established a Parliament with oversight responsibility over the actions of Government.

It is a sad fact that this oversight role is undermined by constraining time abbreviations in conducting meaningful debate in Parliament. However, the UDM welcomes the Minister's commitment to call on a debate on the Congo Conflict.
