MEDIA RELEASE

DROP IN FUEL PRICE

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY GERHARD KOORNHOF,
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON FINANCE

The UDM welcomes the announcement of Minister Mlambo-Ngcuka regarding the reduction in the price of fuel, apparently linked to the temporary abolishment of the Equalisation Fund.

It is a most welcome relief of the financial burden placed upon commuters and lower-income consumers. As much as this allows the man on the street a well-deserved breather, one must realise that this might be short-lived.

A reduction in the Fuel Tax is still a matter that has not been considered by the Government and the hope is expressed that the matter will soon received the necessary attention.

We call on Government to prove its commitment to low-income consumers, small business, entrepreneurs and commuters by addressing the question of the over taxation, through various tariffs and levies, on fuel.

This announcement shortly before the state of the nation address by the President on
4 February must be followed up in that address by the implementation of sound economic policies. In this respect the President must give clear direction.
