GREATER TRANSPARENCY AND COMPETENCY IN APPOINTMENT OF CABINET MINISTERS AND DG’S

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY BANTU HOLOMISA,
UDM PRESIDENT

The political appointment of people into top government positions, who at times have no knowledge of those particular fields, is becoming an embarrassment to the Nation. The recommendation of the ICD on Commissioner Selebi must be taken directly to the Gauteng Attorney-General as no one can effectively discipline him (Selebi) in the police force.

The system of appointment of Cabinet, Directors General and their deputies by the President has proved to have serious weaknesses. This has been evident in the arrogant utterances and the poor performance by some of these Cabinet Ministers and DG’s. There is a threat of the President appointing lackeys into these positions.

To stop this tendency of bellicose ministers and DG’s who think they are powers unto themselves, the UDM proposes a system to ensure checks and balances by the establishment of an independent committee to deal with such selections

Judging by the incumbent commissioner’s unprofessional actions it is evident he is hardly suitable material for a Commissioner of Police, a position which caries a heavy responsibility for the upliftment of the Country’s moral code and is a focal point of foreign investors. ICD is a credible institution which was established by the present government and therefore President Mbeki and Minister Tshwete should suspend Selebi pending the outcome of the Attorney –General’s report.
