UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

LACK OF BASIC EQUIPMENT FOR THE GOVERNMENT COMMERCIAL CRIME SPECIAL INVESTIGATING UNIT

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY MALIZOLE DIKO
UDM NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON

It is really disturbing to find that bodies that are meant to deal with corruption are ill equipped or lack finances.

The latest report by the Government Commercial Special Investigating Unit is embarrassing and should be looked into very seriously and urgently.  The Mbeki government must put its money where its mouth is.  This government has created an impression of being tough on corruption.  It is this government that wasting taxpayers’ money for anti-corruption summits, which have not shown any results.

It is therefore disturbing to find that the GCSIU in the Eastern Cape, one of the leading provinces in corruption, lacks the basic operational instruments like a phone and fax.

Premier Makhenkesi Stofile should explain this to the people of the Eastern Cape.  Is this a deliberate attempt to frustrate this unit or is it ignorance on the part of the government. If it is the latter then Stofile must accept that he has once again failed the people of the Eastern Cape.

The UDM appeals to the government to be responsible.  This corrupt honeymoon must come to an end.
