POLITICAL RE-ALIGNMENT

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY
UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT AND FEDERAL ALLIANCE

In response to the public debate and proposals made by other party leaders on the issues of re-alignment or co-operation the UDM and FA again want to emphasize their position clearly.

1.      We favour re-alignment of the political landscape vs. a mere alliance of opposition parties. In a nutshell this means that the UDM and FA are in favour of a new political formation that can be the alternative government in the future vs. the approach to sustain existing political formations.

2.      Regarding the process the UDM and FA propose that a summit of political leaders takes place before the end of this year to discuss the way forward.

Our own position on the way forward is that a convention of political parties should take place in 2000 to start a new beginning and give effect to re-alignment of the political landscape.

3.      The modalities of participation in Local Government Elections can form part of the Agenda on the way forward. However we want to stress that we do not see merit in a mere alliance of opposition parties for the purpose of local elections. The benefits of that would be short-lived and would not really contribute towards the process of real re-alignment.
