STATEMENT ISSUED BY DR. SIPO MZIMELA, MP The State President and Minister of Health should fight AIDS, not only with words but also with deeds. They should, therefore, reconsider their position against administering AZT to patients. To allow AIDS sufferers to die, while the President and Minister hide behind the side effects of AZT is unacceptable. There is no drug on the market that has no side effects. The side effects AZT can have on patients pales into insignificance when compared to the terminal effect of AIDS itself. The medical profession should be allowed to be the judge and to recommend what is in the best interest of a person that might otherwise die of AIDS. It is already clear that their views differ from those of the above-mentioned politicians. President Mbeki should now back off and AZT made available. It will save lives. Enquiries: 09 November 1999 |
