UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

HOW THE FOXCROFT-ISSUE SHOULD BE HANDLED

MEDIA STATEMENT BY ROELF MEYER,
UDM SPOKESPERSON ON JUSTICE

The UDM strongly advocates that the stricter legislation on rape sentencing should be enforced to eradicate this problem from our society. Therefore we cannot condone this particular judgement and other similar ones in recent times.

The UDM subscribes to the principle of the division of power between the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary functions of government and would therefore rely on the Chief Justice as the main authority as far as matters pertaining to the Judiciary.

However, Parliament has a responsibility, particularly when it comes to the rights of women and children and a clear “message” of concern from Parliament can therefore contribute towards the general awareness, and would emphasize the need for firm action against perpetrators of crimes against women and children.

In this case, the Judiciary should get that “message” too, and the UDM proposes that the Justice Portfolio Committee should directly address the Chief Justice regarding this concern.
