UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

JULIUS NYERERE

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY
MASILO MABETA, UDM SPOKESPERSON ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The UDM would like to express its sadness at the passing away of Julius Nyerere. We extend our sincere condolences to his family in this time of need.

Leader, father, scholar, important Architect and guiding light in the African Revolution, and a Champion of human rights and democracy within that Revolution. South Africa has lost an important source of moral lessons in our quest for transformation and democratic consolidation.

He gave substance and meaning to the significance of sacrifice in Africa’s support for the liberation of Southern Africa from colonialism and imperialism in general, and specifically, the defeat of white authoritarian rule.

His role was equally revolutionary in defining an effective role for Africa in the United Nations, and the way the United Nations system responded to African challenges vis-ŕ-vis First World interests.
