UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

ANCíS CALL ON PATRICIA DE LILLE TO GIVE NAMES TO PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY
 MALIZOLE DIKO, UDM NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON

Smuts Ngonyama, the National Spokesperson of the ANC has called upon Patricia de Lille to divulge the names of the persons who supplied her with the document alleging arms deal corruption by ANC current and former MPís.

The Cape Times also reports that the Chief Whip in the National Assembly was said to be leading the investigation into the process in which the concerned ANC MPís allegedly leaked the report to PAC MP Patricia de Lille.

It is clear from the foregoing that the ANC leadership is shifting the focus away from the revelations of corruption that are alleged in the document which the government is called upon to investigate.  Instead the ANC is pre-occupied with discovering the source of the leak, presumably to unleash a witch-hunt against those MPís.

It is inconceivable that Smuts Ngonyana should demand that Miss de Lille confides to the President the authors of the document when the Presidency itself is implicated in the document.

If the President is seriously concerned about the allegations one would expect him to readily agree to an independent Judicial Commission in order to get to the bottom of the allegations and prove once and for all their veracity of otherwise.

The identity of the persons who leaked the information is not the issue the President should concern himself with.  The allegations are of such a serious nature and reflect so ominously on the government that nothing short of a thorough investigation will satisfy the taxpayer.  It is particularly disturbing that the President himself and the former Minister of Defence were involved in the procurement of the arms.

The attitude displayed by Smuts Ngonyama and the ANC leadership suggests an unwillingness on their part to allow an investigation of the allegations, and a tendency to draw attention away from the core of the problem.
