UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

LAUNCH OF THE DIRECTORATE OF SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS

MEDIA RELEASE ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK, MP
UDM
SPOKESPERSON ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY

The UDM welcomes the stepping on stage of the Directorate Special Investigations in strengthening the combat against crime.

We hope that this is not the last but the first step in co-ordinating the efforts of the different State organs involved in law enforcement. The UDM is of the strong belief that a Ministry of Civil Order co-ordinating the efforts of the departments of Safety and Security, National Intelligence, Correctional Services, Justice and Defence will provide a further boost to effectively address crime. It is only when we have an integrated approach towards the problem that we will be successful in providing all South Africans with safety of the person and property.

Clarity on who and how specific cases would be referred to the Unit and what criteria would be used in order to determine this, is needed as part of the process in establishing the credibility of the Unit in the minds of all South Africans.

The UDM would further urge that government adequately fund the Unit so that it can meet the very high expectations that were set by government.
