MEDIA RELEASE

UNREGISTERED CITIZENS TO SWARM VOTING STATIONS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK as ACTING NATIONAL SECRETARY

With the results from the latest HSRC survey indicating that between 3 and 4 million unregistered voters intend to vote on election day, the UDM is worried about the safety of South Africans at the voting stations.  It is no secret that the government’s insufficient funding has hindered the entire election process, but not until now have we been aware to what an extent voter education has been neglected.  Is the government prepared to handle the repercussions of its shortsighted stinginess?  With masses of uninformed citizens arriving at the voting stations, expecting to exercise their constitutional right to vote, June 2nd promises to be a day of chaos, chaos that could have easily been avoided.  The government must heed the results of the HSRC survey and take every precaution to ensure that the election is run smoothly and, above all, is free and fair.
