UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

RELEASE ISSUED BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK as ACTING NATIONAL SECRETARY

The UDM voices its support for the “United Against Women Abuse” campaign, tomorrow being marked as the national day of awareness for this issue. With at least one woman being raped every 30 seconds in South Africa, violence against women is a plague which society can no longer ignore. We must all work to alleviate the misplaced shame and guilt from which victims of these crimes often suffer and encourage these women to speak out against their violators. Perpetrators of women abuse must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The UDM also asks the government to continue improving its victim empowerment programs and to work to raise society’s awareness of these heinous atrocities.
