UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

CONCERNING THE PRIVATISATION OF SA

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ROELF MEYER as UDM DEPUTY PRESIDENT

In anticipation of SAA’s imminent privatisation, the UDM is calling on the government to ensure that the turnover is beneficial to South Africans. As we have all recently witnessed only foreign parties and a few of South Africa’s elite have been able to capitalise on the transformation of state-run companies. Under the government’s current policies, 65% of South Africans do not have access to capital, and therefore have no chance of participating in the potential opportunities of privatisation.

Privatisation could contribute greatly to the creation of jobs and the acceleration of infrastructure development, but not when the government implements policies which bar its citizens from reaping the benefits. The UDM demands that these obstacles be removed and that the people of South Africa be allowed access to the opportunities which are rightfully theirs.
