UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

EXPULSION OF THE DP & NNP BAR-CODED ID CASES

STATEMENT BY ANNELIZÉ VAN WYK as ACTING NATIONAL SECRETARY

While the UDM is dismayed that many South Africans will be denied the opportunity to vote in the upcoming election, we deem the final promulgation of an election date as being of the utmost importance. The DP and NNP long ago had their opportunity to dispute the tenets of the Electoral Act. Since neglecting their opportunity and responsibility to do so, they have hindered the election process continually with their tardy qualms. Although unfavorable, the conclusion of the bar-coded ID issue is welcomed by the UDM as another step towards the 1999 election.
