UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATIONS

STATEMENT ISSUED BY BANTU HOLOMISA as UDM PRESIDENT

The 27th of April is Freedom Day. The UDM learned that the main government celebrations for the day will be in Umtata. The UDM would like to encourage its members to join these celebrations in Umtata.

Freedom Day belongs to the citizens of South Africa. It is a celebration of our new found democracy, the road we travelled to get there and the spirit in which we unite and build the future. Freedom day should not be high-jacked by any single political party. It should contribute to the reconciliation and nation building process of South Africa. Freedom Day celebrations will also be one of the last opportunities for President Mandela to address the nation as the President of the country. If public transport is made available to enable people to attend the celebrations, UDM members will be urged to make use of these to attend the festivities and to play an active role in the day and through that contribute to uniting South Africans as a nation.
